Climate Actions: Change Your Heating
As we head into colder months, heating becomes one of our biggest household emissions.
Changing the way we heat our homes - and what we expect from it - can significantly reduce energy use, costs, and our climate impact. This doesn’t mean going cold. It means rethinking comfort, efficiency, and system design.
Here are some small-and-slow ideas to try this winter:
Layer up indoors - hats, cosy jumpers, hot water bottles, and warm socks and slippers
Insulate your loft - the most effective intervention if it has not yet been done
Focus on people, not rooms - heat what you need, when you need it
Use heavy curtains & draught excluders to keep warmth in, especially for leaky windows and doors
Ventilate smartly - short bursts of fresh air help without major heat loss
Maximise passive solar gain - open curtains during the day, close at night
Explore renewable systems like heat pumps, solar thermal, or biomass if you’re able
